They thought he had been sent to the stars, but wherever he really was, he wasn't alone... His Duel Disk and deck were corrupted and the spirits in his mind were gone. Just then, a young girl with brown hair and blue eyes had found him. "Looks like you're the new student everyone's talking about." she said.
The girl held up a red device and a portal opened. She told the older boy to follow her. He did and the spirits rejoined him, but they looked different. "Yubel?" This one didn't change much, just with a machine gun replacing her right tricep.
"Banner?" This spirit was still absent, but one that accompanied it remained. "Pharaoh?" The spirit kept its cat-like appearance, but was skinnier, and its color change. The cat was now white with violet stripes.
"Winged Kuriboh?" The first acquired and final spirit couldn't speak. Instead, it made whistling noises. But it was once just a brown ball of fluff. Now, it looked more like a rabbit with three horns and red stripes.
"I'm Yusara, by the way, Yusara Fujiki. You must be Jaden Yuki."
The boy nodded. Another rabbit-like creature appeared on Yusara's shoulder. This one was a cream color with green stripes. "Welcome to Digimon Academy, Yuki!" it said happily.
Yusara patted the rabbit. "Sorry about Terriemon." she said to Jaden. "He gets really exited whenever there's a new student."
"A new student already?" a deep voice asked. "I was only here a week."
"This is Atem, better known in our network as Yami Yugi." Yusara introduced Jaden to the spiky-haired boy who looked too much like someone he was huge fan of. "He's a hologram from a sister company. We're keeping him here for improvements."
There goes Jaden's first question. "Are you related to Yugi Muto?" he wanted to ask. But Yami was artificial, there was no way.
"I was just about to show Jaden here around and give him the basics. You and Sphynxmon still have training to do."
Another cat of gold color with blue stripes jumped out from behind Yami. "Oh, we beat that dragon already. Three times. Going on four until Asahi showed up."
"Who's Asahi?" Jaden asked.
"I'll explain later." Yusara answered. "Come with me."
Jaden followed Yusara to a testing room. "You're now in Digimon Academy in the EDEN network. The sudden transformation of your Duel Disk, Duel Monsters deck, and Duel Spirits was simply to prepare you for this... 'new adventure', so to speak."
"Then what happened to Banner?" Jaden asked.
"When I found you, I sent him and the other one to be converted." Yusara answered. "Luckily, the others could easily be converted manually."
Hau... Jaden thought to himself.
Terriermon handed him a crimson device very similar to Yusara's. "This is your D-Power. All the students have one."
Jaden took the D-Power and all his now Digimon went inside. Yusara was running diagnostics on Jaden's team. "This 'Yubel' you mentioned is exceptionally rare. A feminine Beelzemon is highly coveted among hackers. You're lucky, but be careful."
Just then, a red dinosaur-dragon Digimon dashed in. "Hey, Yusara, did you bring back a Tamer for me?"
"Not yet, Asahi." Yusara replied. "But I did find the Key Keeper Yami mentioned. Why don't you show him around while I finish scanning his Digimon?"
"Sure thing~!" Asahi cheered. She grabbed Jaden's hand and shook it floppily. "Hi Key Keeper, I'm Asahi. Asahi the Guilmon!"
"My name's Jaden." Jaden introduced himself to the Guilmon. "Before I just became a Digimon Tamer, I was on my way to becoming the next King of Games."
"Really?" Asahi seemed intrigued. "That would've put Kaiba at the fourth-best Duelist in the world." she said as the two walked out into the main hall.
Jaden looked shocked. "Kaiba? As in the Seto Kaiba?!"
Asahi nodded. "Kamishiro Enterprises and KaibaCorp are sister companies."
"So, Yami's a KaibaCorp hologram?"
"Yup." Asahi went on. "He was created to replace the real Atem after Yugi defeated him. Yugi became the true King of Games, which put Atem at second-best, which makes Kaiba third-best. So if you made it to King of Games, Kaiba would be fourth-best."
"Wait," Jaden was going to have so many questions. "what do you mean Yami replaced the real Atem?"
Asahi slowed her speech. "Well, ya see, Atem was posing as Yugi in the Duelist Kingdom, Battle City, and KaibaCorp Grand Championship tournaments. He was an amnesiac pharaoh that shared Yugi's body when Yugi possessed the Millennium Puzzle. After Atem got his memory back, he and Yugi had to Duel to prove Yugi could stand on his own. When Yugi won, Atem passed into the Afterlife. Kaiba was furious. Atem was the only one with the Dueling skills to match him, so he made Yami from his memories of Atem to replace him. For some reason, he thought raising a Digimon would help him keep up with his original incarnate."
Jaden nodded as if he could take it all in. "So, what are the dorms like here? If it's anything like Slifer Red, I'll feel right at home."
"Actually, dorms here are a little different than at Duel Academy." Asahi answered. "From highest to lowest, the dorms rank as follows: Light Pink, Hope Yellow, and Courage Orange."
Jaden's eyes lit up. "Orange, Orange, put me in Orange!"
Asahi jumped back in shock. "But your Dueling skills say you clearly belong in Light Pink! Why would you want to be at the bottom?!"
"Same reason I was in Slifer Red at Duel Academy." Jaden answered. "I have the skills of an Obelisk Blue, but was put in Red by some cocky teacher because I was late for registration. If I'm a new student, I'm way late to register."
Asahi giggled. "You're funny. I wish you could be my Tamer."
"Relax." Jaden reassured her. "I'm sure you'll find someone. Well, I'm off. See ya around." Jaden left Asahi and followed the map on his D-Power to the Courage Orange dorm.
